Don't set goals that rely on specific outcomes, especially short-term ones. Instead, focus on setting goals based on habits.

The Problems with Outcome-Dependent Goals:
Imagine setting a goal to get promoted to a managerial position within the next six months. Even if you have the skills and qualifications, the final decision is ultimately up to your superiors, company policies and internal competition. This means there's a high chance of feeling disappointed if the goal is not achieved.
Embrace Habit-Based Goals:
Instead of solely focusing on goals that depend on others, it's better to shift our attention to habit-based goals. For example, rather than aiming for a promotion, set a habit-based goal of consistently seeking opportunities for professional development. This could involve attending workshops, learning new skills or networking with colleagues and superiors in your field. By consistently taking these actions, you not only enhance your professional growth but also increase your chances of getting promoted.
Track Progress, Celebrate Small Wins and Build Momentum:
If your habit-based goal is to attend one professional development workshop every month, each workshop you complete becomes a small achievement. Celebrating these victories reinforces a sense of accomplishment and motivates you to keep pursuing your goals.
Incorporate habit-tracking techniques to make your goals more effective. By visually tracking and acknowledging your consistent progress, you'll be motivated to maintain that chain of success. This momentum helps you stay motivated and keeps you moving forward, even on days when you don't feel motivated.
