Being Everything to Everyone is a Sure way to Sabotage Your Leadership Journey
🚀 A lot of people, including me, talk about what leaders should be like. They should do this, they should do that. But here's the truth: leaders are just regular people. They can't make everyone happy all the time. There were times when I let people down pretty badly. About a year ago, one of my team members was upset with me and it made me feel terrible, even though everyone else was happy with me. It took me a while to understand this quote by John Ortberg: "Leadership is the art of disappointing people at a rate they can stand."
Even our favourite superheroes have people who don't like them. That's why it's important to find your own pace and stick to it. Remember, nobody's perfect.
💡 Many leaders fall into the trap of trying to please everyone, juggling the demands of team members and upper management until they inevitably burn out. But here's the truth: You can't be everything to everyone.
👥 Team members usually want their leader's time and attention. But you can't give all your time to everyone. Instead of trying to please everyone, focus on what’s important where your time matters a lot, where your other team member can take care of it and where your team member him/herself takes care of it. Instead of trying to do everything, focus on helping your team members become leaders themselves. This will lighten your load and also foster a culture of growth and autonomy.
🔍 Sometimes, you won't be able to do everything you promised. And that's okay. What matters is how you deal with it. Instead of blaming others, take responsibility and talk openly about what happened and what needs to be done to make sure this time you do it and work together. This shows that you're honest, reliable and trustworthy. Being a real leader isn't about being perfect. It's about being honest, taking care of yourself and doing the right thing. 🌟
