Do you dread giving feedback to your team members?
Are you worried that constructive criticism will be taken as a personal attack?
Several managers struggle with these kinds of questions, but the good news is that there’s a simple yet effective technique that can make the process easier: the feedback sandwich.
The basic idea is to “sandwich” the feedback between two pieces of positive reinforcement.
To use the feedback sandwich, start by telling the team member something positive about their work or a specific project they did well on.
This sets the stage and helps to build the team member’s confidence.
Next, deliver the feedback. Be clear, direct, and specific in your feedback, but also keep it constructive and focused on the behaviour or action, not the person.
Finally, end the conversation on a positive note. This could be another compliment, an expression of confidence in the team member’s abilities, or a reminder of something they do well.
